Bonnie Raitt – I Can’t Make You Love Me

From the album, “Luck of the Draw” (1991). A great album that produced several hits. Bruce Hornsby on the piano.

A short story:

I had been dating a very nice girl for a few months. I knew she loved me; we had exchanged “I love you” many times. Eventually, I met another girl in the grocery store, and really fell hard for her (I ended up marrying her).

Well, we were watching Saturday Night Live, and Bonnie Raitt sang this song. I knew I wasn’t in love with this lady anymore and I was going to have to break it off. It was awkward hearing the song with her next to me, but she told me later that she knew I was going to break up with her.

Footnote: I ended up divorcing the grocery-store-girl five years later. Uggghhhh!

“Turn down the lights
Turn down the bed
Turn down these voices inside my head
Lay down with me
Tell me no lies
Just hold me close, don’t patronize
Don’t patronize me

‘Cause I can’t make you love me if you don’t
You can’t make your heart feel something it won’t
Here in the dark, in these final hours
I will lay down my heart and I’ll feel the power
But you won’t, no you won’t
‘Cause I can’t make you love me, if you don’t

I’ll close my eyes, then I won’t see
The love you don’t feel when you’re holding me
Morning will come and I’ll do what’s right
Just give me till then to give up this fight
And I will give up this fight

‘Cause I can’t make you love me if you don’t
You can’t make your heart feel something it won’t
Here in the dark, in these final hours
I will lay down my heart and I’ll feel the power
But you won’t, no you won’t
‘Cause I can’t make you love me, if you don’t”
